While 2010/2011 was a great year for property acquisitions, including the much heralded Golden Ranch acquisition, 2012 is shaping up to be yet another banner year and we need your Club’s help. With a short window on many purchases, it is important that we have some money in reserve so that we can acquire critical habitat as it becomes available. We are currently working with our partners on two purchases and need to raise in excess of $70,000 to meet our commitments in these partnerships.
The 100 acre Grandview Property is located approximately six kilometres west of Golden Ranches. The Ranch represents an unprecedented conservation project within the province of Alberta and the nearby Grandview Property reflects many of the same values. Located on the shore of South Cooking Lake, the habitat primarily consists of deciduous forests, dominated by trembling aspen and balsam poplar, interspersed with wetlands, naturalizing meadows and shrub lands. Both moose and deer are regular residents on the property, as well as numerous species of waterfowl and upland birds. There are substantial development pressures in the area. The majority of land to the south and east has been developed into country-residential acreages. Agricultural land, consisting primarily of cattle farming, exists to the west of the property.
The 954 acre Ross Creek Property is located east of Medicine Hat on the north side of the TransCanada Highway. It consists primarily of native grasslands and Ross Creek runs for three kilometres through the property offering some unique riparian habitat. White-tail deer, mule deer and pronghorn are commonly found on the property and it provides some great habitat for pheasants and other upland birds. Numerous threatened and endangered species also call this property home. Opportunities also exist to expand on the property’s wetlands.
The Wildlife Trust Fund is in immediate need of funds to help with the purchase of these critical properties. Please feel free to contact AFGA habitat staff if you require additional information and please send your donations to the Wildlife Trust Fund so we can secure these properties for future generations to enjoy. We are hoping to raise enough funds to participate in the conservation of both these high profile properties. Any additional funds will allow us to work on new referrals that continue to come in.
Individuals can also make donations to the Wildlife Trust Fund. Donations of $10 or more will receive a charitable tax receipt.
Please send donations to:
