Letter to Premier Stelmach

Dear Premier Stelmach:

The Alberta Fish & Game Association (AFGA) has learned that your government is in the process of selling a major tract of public land that is valued between 30-40 million dollars in a highly sensitive ecological region in southern Alberta to SLM Spud Farms of Taber who apparently will be irrigating and using it for agricultural purposes.

I’m sure that you’re aware that this area is critical to the survival of a number of species at risk that inhabit the area such as the burrowing owl and ferruginous hawk among others. There is also less than 5% of native prairie grassland region left and this further destruction will help to seal the fate of these species as well as any outdoors enjoyment by future generations.

We have continually urged the Alberta Government to stop selling public lands but all it seems to have done is drive you underground and make these decisions behind closed doors where the public cannot let their feelings be known.

The AFGA has had a long-standing policy that does not support the sale of any publicly owned lands especially in light of the fact that the “white areas” contain very limited amounts of publicly-owned land.

These islands of nature often stand out as wonderful fish and wildlife habitats which provide all Albertans opportunities for hunting, fishing, berry-picking, wildlife viewing, or other recreational activities.

The AFGA, again unanimously calls for an immediate and permanent stop of the sale of all publicly-owned land in Alberta.
