HOEPPNER CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL YUKON TRIP Portage-Lisgar MP Says Yukon Residents Calling for the End of the Long-Gun Registry
WHITEHORSE,
YUKON- Candice Hoeppner, Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar,
concluded a successful trip to Whitehorse, Yukon today as part of an
effort to rally support for her bill to end the long-gun registry.
"As
I listened to constituents, spoke at roundtable meetings and met with
stakeholder groups, it was clear that Canadians in the north agree that
the long-gun registry must end," said Hoeppner. "The vast majority of
people I heard from said that long-guns are a way of life in the Yukon,
and the registry is an unwanted and unnecessary intrusion into their
lifestyle and on aboriginal treaty rights."
Hoeppner travelled to
the Yukon as part of a campaign to visit the ridings of various NDP and
Liberal Members of Parliament who supported her bill at second reading
last November, and challenge them to continue to support her private
Member's bill.
At a Whitehorse town hall meeting organized by the
Yukon Fish & Game Association (YFGA), Hoeppner addressed a large
crowd and spoke about why she continues to believe it's time to end the
long-gun registry. "This is a very difficult and
emotionally-charged issue, but at the end of the day, the fact remains
that the registry hasn't saved a single life as intended, and has cost
taxpayers over 500 times the initial cost estimate." Yukon MP Larry Bagnell continues to sidestep questions on which way he will vote on Hoeppner's bill.
"Mr.
Bagnell has been scarce these past few days; he has not come out and
said how he plans to vote on my bill in September. I believe that Mr. Ignatieff
has put him in an impossible situation, but the moment of truth is
coming, and I hope that he will reject his leader's strong-arm tactics,
uphold the tradition of private member's bills and vote to reflect the
will of his constituents on this issue," Hoeppner continued.
This
spring, Ignatieff announced that he would whip the Liberal vote,
leaving Bagnell and seven other Liberal MPs who voted in favour of
Hoeppner's bill at second reading in a difficult position.
Earlier
this week, Hoeppner was in Keith Martin's riding of Esquimalt-Juan de
Fuca on Vancouver Island. Upcoming stops include Estevan, Saskatchewan
and northern Ontario, leading up to the return of Parliament and a vote
on a report from the Public Safety Committee to kill Bill C-391.
